Paediatric acupuncture and Chinese medicine for kids and teens in Upwey

If you are looking for a gentle, natural approach to supporting your child’s health and well-being, paediatric acupuncture offers a safe option.

Many parents are surprised to learn that treating kids and teens with Chinese medicine is quite different from treating adults. At Upwey Acupuncture, sessions are designed to be comfortable, interactive, and completely tailored to your child’s age, temperament, and comfort levels.

We proudly welcome families from Upwey, as well as surrounding Dandenong Ranges and Knox communities including Tecoma, Belgrave, Upper Ferntree Gully, Ferntree Gully, Boronia, Rowville, and Scoresby.

How paediatric acupuncture works

Children usually have dynamic, responsive constitutions, which means their care requires a very light touch.

  • Short or immediate needle retention: Younger children and babies rarely sit still for long! When needles are used, they are ultra-fine and often inserted and removed immediately (in-and-out), rather than left in place.
  • Minimal needles: A session may involve using only one or two points. Often, a single gentle point is all that is needed to help encourage balance and support your child’s natural vitality.
  • Curious, not fearful: Children are naturally curious. I take the time to show them how everything works in a friendly, playful way so they feel relaxed and safe.

Non-needle options for sensitive kids

Needles are never compulsory. For babies, toddlers, or children who feel nervous, I can provide gentle, completely needle-free treatments using alternative techniques to stimulate acupuncture points:

  • Shonishin & acupressure: Gentle pressing, rubbing, or tapping techniques along point pathways.
  • Tui Na (paediatric massage): Soothing, specialised massage tailored for children.
  • Moxibustion (gentle heat therapy): Applying mild, warming herbal heat near specific points to nourish energy and comfort.
  • Tuning forks: Using subtle sound vibrations to stimulate acupuncture points.

Every session is guided by your child’s comfort — I only ever work on areas of the body and with methods that your child is happy with.

Postgraduate international training

I completed my postgraduate training in paediatric acupuncture in the UK under Julian Scott, an internationally renowned authority and author in the field of acupuncture for children.

Bringing over 20 years of clinical experience and specialised international study to the Dandenong Ranges, I aim to provide a warm, supportive space where parents and children feel listened to and cared for.

FAQs

Paediatric acupuncture is remarkably gentle. The needles used for children are hair-thin and designed for maximum comfort. For younger children, needles are typically inserted and removed in a few seconds. Most children feel only a tiny tap or warm sensation, and many needle-free options are always available.

That is completely okay! I never force treatment. If your child is nervous, we can use non-needle modalities such as paediatric massage (Tui Na), gentle acupressure, mild warming heat (moxibustion), or vibrational tuning forks. My primary goal is to make your child feel safe, comfortable, and happy.

Your consultation begins with a relaxed conversation about your child’s health history, sleep, appetite, and daily routine. I will explain every step to both you and your child in an age-appropriate way. Depending on their needs, treatment may combine a mix of light massage, acupressure, or gentle needle points.

For children under 10 years old, sessions are booked for 30 minutes. This provides plenty of time for assessment and gentle treatment without overwhelming young attention spans. For children aged 10 and over, standard initial consultation times are used to allow for a more comprehensive assessment.

Yes. When performed by a qualified, AHPRA-registered practitioner trained in paediatric care, acupuncture and Chinese medicine bodywork are considered safe, gentle care options adapted specifically for infants and growing children.
